Having a beastly time, or not | JPF MONTHLY

Hello Reader

Do these people look as if they’re having a beastly time?

They were participants on an online writing course with the Arvon Foundation.

Later this month, I’m running another Arvon course. This time it’s concentrated into a single day.

You’ll discover creative ways to develop your stories – to bring people and settings to life, and play with narrative structures.

As if that wasn’t enough, you also get the chance to meet the editor of my latest book, Elizabeth Neep, a fountain of wisdom and kindness who happens also to work as editorial director at DK.

If you want to have a good time AND finesse your writing talents – or if you know someone else who’d like that – well, you can find out more here:

Online Writing Day: Non-Fiction
Friday 26 April, 10am to 4pm UK.

FYI, I started publishing my newsletter much more frequently, because if I don't have a rhythm I'm liable to drop it for weeks and months at a time, and then kick myself.

If you do nothing, you'll continue to receive monthly updates. Or you can click here for the Weekly edition.

If you are completely bonkers, you can even get a (nearly) daily version, but you'll have to ask to be added to that. I don't want to annoy people by sending what's not wanted.

Till next time.

Yesterday I told you that my late father in law, Jack, could distinguish between 50 to 60 industrial grades of paper. That got me thinking. Recently, on LinkedIn, I mentioned that printed newspapers still seem wonderful to me - even accounting for stories and opinions within them that I don’t like so much. One of the people who commented on my LinkedIn post made an interesting distinction between digital media and putting something on paper. Print demonstrates a commitment, he said. There’s a...

Hello Reader Yesterday I sent out a newsletter confirming that the next Writers Support Group takes place on 28 November (at 12.30 and 6pm UK). Someone gently pointed out that I have previously suggested, somewhere or other, that it would take place on 21 Nov. Aaargh. . [ Flintoff takes a breath. ] . Sorry for the muddle. . Where possible (not December, what with Christmas) I'd like to stick to the Fourth Thursday each month. So please join me on 28th November. BUT as it happens I was already...
